OSF ST. JOSEPH MEDICAL CENTER
Experiences: At OSF-SJMC, I was able to attend staff meetings, including a wound care meeting. I was also able to observe a custom TPN mixing in the pharmacy as well as watch a PEG tube placement. I got to work on all patient floors of the hospital. This allowed me to gain experience in problem solving on care for patients with comorbidities and complications, nutrition counseling, nutrition recommendations, nutrition education, nutrition support, charting with EPIC, using CBORD, and so on.
Projects: I did a minor and major case study at this facility. The minor case study was on a patient with third spacing. I educated on the topic of third spacing during my presentation. The major case study was on a patient on TPN with a colocutaneous fistula, and I educated on colocutaneous fistulas for my presentation. Additionally, a fellow intern and I completed an outcomes research project in which we aimed to determine the acceptability of a Juven supplement at the hospital as well as the amount consumed.

Experiences: An interesting experience was observing some small bowel tube placements that were placed by dietitians. My experience at this site was different from my previous clinical rotation site. Most patients I saw at Memorial were patients in need of nutrition support, so I got a lot of experience in calculating and making TPN and tube feed recommendations. Furthermore, I got more experience with burn and wound patients.
Project: I presented a mini case study on a patient with sepsis, respiratory failure, pneumonia, and dysphagia. The topic of focus was aspiration pneumonia.
